Real Madrid defender expected to be out for four months; not considering retirement | OneFootball

Real Madrid confirmed earlier this week that Ferland Mendy had suffered an injury to the rectus femoris tendon of his right leg, which will need him to undergo surgery.

Initial prognosis suggested that the 30-year-old left-back would be out for about five months, but reports emerged on Thursday claiming that the situation was much worse and that he could be sidelined for as long as one year.

As such, it was even suggested that Mendy was considering retiring from professional football after facing yet another serious injury setback.

Mendy to be out for four months

However, providing an update on the situation, MARCA reports that, contrary to what was being claimed, Mendy will be out of action for four months post-surgery.

As per the report, the French defender has chosen to place himself in the hands of the doctor who previously treated Kylian Mbappe for his knee injury, during the controversial trip to Paris in search of a diagnosis.

The specialist is Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading orthopaedic surgeons in the treatment of knee injuries for elite athletes.

The past few days have been spent considering the best possible option for his recovery. Just over a year ago, Mendy underwent surgery for a muscular injury, an operation carried out in Madrid by Dr Manuel Leyes.

He also considered undergoing treatment with Finnish surgeon Lasse Lempainen, the specialist who operated on Eder Militao and another highly respected expert in this field. But, he has now decided to place himself in the hands of Sonnery-Cottet.

No retirement

Furthermore, despite the speculations of Mendy considering retirement, journalist Romain Molina clarifies that the defender is not planning on hanging up his boots.

The information has been corroborated by MARCA as well, with the Spanish outlet claiming that the Frenchman is refusing to surrender.

Mendy remains convinced that he will return next season and continue at Real Madrid, where he is under contract until 2028, with the aim of reclaiming his place in defence.
