After five successful seasons, David Alaba’s time at Real Madrid could come to an end in the summer of 2026.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Austrian international is set to leave the club at the end of the season as a free agent, when his contract expires.

Alaba not in Real Madrid’s plans

Signed from Bayern Munich as a free agent in the summer of 2021, Alaba soon became a key player for Real Madrid, helping fill the void left by the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

However, injuries have taken a toll on the veteran defender over the past year and a half, preventing him from reclaiming his spot in the team.

Alaba suffered an ACL injury in December 2023 and complications in his recovery meant that he was out of action for more than a year.

Since returning to action earlier this year, the former Bayern Munich ace has found minutes hard to come by, and has been sidelined again this week due to muscle overload.

Given his high wages and fitness issues, Alaba does not feature in Real Madrid’s plans for the future beyond this season.

As such, the 33-year-old defender will bid goodbye to the Santiago Bernabeu when his contract expires on 30 June, 2026.

Replacements lined up

Along with Alaba, Real Madrid could also part ways with Antonio Rudiger, who also finds himself in a similar situation to the Austrian international.

With the possibility of two defenders leaving, Los Blancos have already lined up replacements to fill the gap.

Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate, who will also become a free agent in the summer, is the top target at Valdebebas.

Players like Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich) and Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), also on expiring contracts, are being considered as well.
