Real Madrid are gearing up for a busy summer ahead, and the club will have to make multiple key decisions as far as their squad-building is concerned.
One of them could be the contract situation of two veterans – Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez – whose contracts are expiring on June 30.
There hasn’t been much noise regarding a renewal in recent weeks, especially amid the club’s poor form. However, as we move closer to the deadline, Real Madrid must make a decision.
According to AS, Real Madrid are guaranteed to extend Modric and Vazquez’s contract but for two weeks.
This is due to an anomaly that many European clubs will face this season. Traditionally, a player’s contract in each corresponding year expires on June 30.

However, with this being the year of the inaugural edition of the new FIFA Club World Cup, FIFA has granted clubs the right to reach a small, two-week agreement so players can participate in the competition, which will end on July 13.
Real Madrid, to that end, are certain that both Modric and Vazquez’s renewed will be renewed for two weeks so that they can take part in the competition.
Once the competition is over, Real Madrid will face the big decision – whether or not to keep hold of these two veterans.
As the report, the prospects do not look good for Vazquez, whose role in the team could dwindle further due to the return of Dani Carvajal next season.
Not to mention, Real Madrid are in advanced stages in the deal to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold.
As for Modric, the veteran star still has a chance to renew his contract. However, with Real Madrid looking to add more reinforcements in midfield, the Croatian international might have to significantly reduce his salary and accept a tertiary role in the team.
It will be up to Modric to decide whether or not he wants to play under such conditions
