Real Madrid enquire about two right-backs to replace Dani Carvajal

Real Madrid have become their summer transfer window in earnest, despite not having a president in place. Incumbent Florentino Perez and Enrique Riquelme will go to the polls on Sunday, with Perez a clear favourite to win, and he has already promised signings will come in if he is re-elected.

One of those looks likely to be Ibrahima Konate, who would arrive on a free transfer from Liverpool, while Jose Mourinho has reportedly penned his Real Madrid contract already. The Portuguese manager is keen to bring in a number of reinforcements for his backline though, telling the club that he is keen to sign two centre-backs, two midfielders, a right-back and a left-back.

The right-back spot seems likely to be one of the wishes that Mourinho will see fulfilled. Following the exit of Dani Carvajal, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only natural option there, although Fede Valverde has shown ample ability to fill in there. As per Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have enquired about Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro, to whom they have been linked to for some time, and Inter defender Denzel Dumfries. The latter has a release clause of €25m this summer.

Los Blancos’ interest in Dumfries has also been confirmed by RadioMarca, who say that Dumfries is liked as a low-cost option to improve their squad depth.

Which right-back fits Real Madrid better?

It would seem clear that Porro would be a more sensible signing, given he is only 26, four years younger than Dumfries (30). Porro is also a Spain international, and as a native, should in theory adapt well to a move to Madrid – the Spurs defender has also left the door open to a move to Real Madrid in the past.

The issue may be the cost. Porro still has two years left on his deal at Tottenham, who may not want to lose their starter on the cheap, given they signed him for €40m. Dumfries would be cheaper, but is unlikely to have much sell-on value. Both would provide a contrast to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who tends to do his best work offensively with the ball at his feet.
