Rodrygo was one of the more unfortunate players at Real Madrid as a long-term injury ruled him out of action for a chunk of last season.

The forward also missed the World Cup this summer due to the injury, with Brazil eventually getting eliminated in the Round of 16.

However, there might be light at the tunnel for the Brazilian as Real Madrid begin preparations for the season ahead.

Rodrygo ahead of schedule

According to AS, there is growing optimism surrounding Rodrygo’s recovery, with the Brazilian now expected to return sooner than initially feared.

The forward suffered a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus in his right knee during a match against Getafe on March 2, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the season and a large portion of the next.

Four months on, however, his progress has been excellent. Rodrygo is now trending closer to a ten-month recovery rather than the twelve months first suggested.

Medical clearance is expected in January, which would represent the minimum end of his initial diagnosis.

Having undergone surgery on March 10, the 25-year-old has since been working tirelessly through long physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions, regaining mobility in his knee while maintaining his fitness in the gym.

He has been walking without issue for several weeks, allowing him to lead a relatively normal life, even attending the World Cup as a spectator to watch Brazil and meeting up with Cristiano Ronaldo.

While January is the target to be declared fit, returning to full match sharpness and potentially reclaiming a starting spot will likely take longer.

A leadership role at the Bernabeu

Despite being sidelined, Rodrygo has remained a central figure around the squad, and his standing at the club has actually risen in recent weeks.

The Brazilian reported to Valdebebas from day one of pre-season, undergoing his medical checks alongside the players not involved at the World Cup, and has since been a constant presence.

Dani Carvajal’s departure has also triggered a reshuffle in the captaincy hierarchy.

Federico Valverde is now the club captain, followed by Vinicius Jr, Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo as fourth captain.
