Speaking to the Belgian media ahead of a crucial World Cup qualification clash with Wales, Belgium’s number one Thibaut Courtois was keen to remind the team that they cannot take their opponents lightly. As reported by HLN, the Real Madrid goalkeeper said ‘Everyone knows that tomorrow is important and that we have to match their intensity from the start. I think we have more quality, so that intensity will be important’.
In the previous meeting between the two sides, Belgium looked to be in complete control before relinquishing a lead and having to find a late goal to win the game. The Red Devils had a 3-0 lead until just before half-time. Wales came back in the second half, with Kevin De Bruyne having to score late on to earn Belgium three points.
Courtois and co are now under pressure after a 0-0 draw in their last game against North Macedonia. They have a game in hand over their opponents who now sit top of the group. However, a defeat or draw to Wales on Monday will hand the initiative to North Macedonia and bring Wales back into the picture. If Belgium finish outside of the top two, they can wave goodbye to the World Cup.
