Real Madrid ‘have not considered’ Jose Mourinho return as manager

Real Madrid could seek a new manager this summer, with Alvaro Arbeloa contracted only until the end of the season. His La Liga record has been good, yet there is little evidence he has markedly improved the side since succeeding Xabi Alonso.

Speculation over a Jose Mourinho comeback has grown in recent weeks, with his Benfica due at the Bernabeu on Wednesday for the Champions League play-off second leg. Diario AS reports that Madrid have never considered re-hiring Mourinho and do not view him as the required standard to move the team forward.

Mourinho has already dismissed the rumours of a return. Jurgen Klopp remains the leading candidate if a change is pursued.

This summer brings major calls on the dugout and several first-team players. Hopes that Alonso would front a new era from this season faded with his January exit, so another reboot may not come until 2026-27.

Much will hinge on availability. Klopp has given no indication he will return to the dugout, while Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann could be free after the 2026 World Cup. They are not currently being discussed inside the Madrid offices, but that could change in the coming months.
