Real Madrid have been working on a complete defensive revamp for a long time now, and the signings of Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alvaro Carreras were the first step towards that objective.
Departures, needless to say, are concurrently required and Ferland Mendy has largely been seen as a candidate for the same in recent weeks.
Just when it seemed like he was back from his long-time out, the player suffered yet another setback – one that kept him out for the remainder of 2025.
Now, the player is set to return to training and is close to receiving the medical all-clear. His rough injury history, however, leaves his future in a grey area at this point.
As relayed by AS in a recent report, Mendy is eyeing a return in the Spanish Super Cup and wants to be completely ready for the event. He does, however, have a lot to prove.

His contract with Real Madrid is effective until 2027, but the club are already willing to listen to offers and have grown vexed with his unreliable fitness.
If Mendy wants to stay and see out his contract, he must impress in the few chances he earns on two fronts – first his fitness and second his form being the same as it was when he was a regular.
Mendy has missed 37 of Real Madrid’s last 46 games, a staggering 80%, due to injuries. Further, he has played just 101 minutes in 292 days, a figure that really provides a clear picture of his unreliability.
Alvaro Carreras has well and truly taken over as Real Madrid’s first-choice left-back in his absence and Fran Garcia has moved up to being the first-choice backup. Mendy, thus, appears to be the closest to leaving the department and a lot must change if that hierarchy is to see a shift.
