Real Madrid were one of the busiest teams in the summer transfer window, notably spending close to €180 million on new players.

A majority of those investments have come in the defensive unit, with Los Blancos bringing in two new full-backs and a centre-back.

However, Real Madrid have their work cut out still as they look to fully reform the defensive unit. While Dean Huijsen has become a guaranteed starter, there is much uncertainty surrounding other centre-backs including Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba.

There is a possibility both may leave at the end of the season, which would certainly force Real Madrid to enter the market for a new centre-back in the summer of 2026.

William Saliba remains a top choice

According to AS, Real Madrid have retained their interest in the services of William Saliba, who was closely linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu this past summer.

However, his high price-tag and Arsenal’s determination meant Real Madrid eventually had to go for Hujisen – a transfer that has paid off so far.

But it appears Los Blancos have not lost sight of Saliba yet as the Frenchman fits the criteria that the club are looking for – young but experienced with loads of quality.

Saliba, in fact, is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. And it must be noted that he is yet to renew his contract at Emirates.

Although Arsenal are ready to hand him a long-term deal, no breakthrough has happened yet. This is why Real Madrid are keeping a close track of the situation, looking for any kind of market opportunity to sign the Frenchman.

Saliba, of course, is not the only defender on Real Madrid’s radar, with the club also being linked with a move for Ibrahima Konate.

The Liverpool defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, with many expecting him to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2026.
