That’s according to Diario AS, who have on Monday provided an insight into the situation.

Smit, for those not familiar with his name, is a 19-year-old midfielder, who is currently plying his club trade in his home country of the Netherlands, with AZ Alkmaar.

The starlet is fresh off something of a breakout season in 2024/25, which saw him rack up 25 appearances across all competitions in Alkmaar’s colours.

It was Smit’s performances at the recently-completed U19 European Championships, though, which saw clubs across the continent truly take note of the youngster’s talents.

Smit played a leading role in the Netherlands ultimately clinching glory at the Euros, named Player of the Tournament late this past week.

And as alluded to above, front and centre amongst the list of clubs keen on the player’s signature are Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid.

As per a report from AS:

‘Real Madrid have him in their sights, and they’ve just stepped it up a gear. Nothing’s finalized yet, far from it, but there are moves. Contacts, approaches. He’s a very serious option for this summer.’

It now remains to be seen if AZ Alkmaar can be talked into a summer sale.
