Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid seem keen on adding a marquee midfielder to their squad this summer and have looked at a number of names in recent times.

After a few weeks of assessing options, it does feel like they have narrowed in on their priority target: Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.

According to Nizaar Kinsella of BBC (h/t Madrid Zone), Enzo is now at the top of Real Madrid’s shortlist, and the player wants to join the club, with talks underway again.

The Chelsea midfielder has been linked with the club for months and has previously openly admitted his admiration for the Spanish giants.

Sales could still shape the operation

The big question is whether Real Madrid can create the space needed for a deal of this size. Enzo is not a cheap opportunity.

Chelsea paid a British-record fee to sign him from Benfica in 2023, and his contract situation gives the Premier League club a strong position.

Chelsea would demand a very high fee, and should Madrid push to pull this off, it would have to be a Galactico-level operation.

For Madrid, that means exits still matter. If players such as Aurelien Tchouameni or Eduardo Camavinga become serious sale candidates, the Enzo route becomes easier to understand.

A Mourinho-coded midfielder

From a sporting angle, Enzo makes obvious sense. He has intensity, passing range, international experience and the character to play in demanding environments. He is not just a possession midfielder, he can compete, press and move the ball forward quickly.

That is exactly the kind of profile Mourinho tends to value. Real Madrid already have quality, but they need balance: players who can survive pressure, cover ground and still make clean decisions.

The player’s desire is also important. If Enzo truly wants Real Madrid, it gives the club leverage, especially if Chelsea face pressure from the player later in the window.

Real Madrid should stay aggressive, but disciplined. Enzo would improve the midfield immediately, yet the club cannot overpay unless the squad plan is clear.

Los Blancos have failed to replace Toni Kroos ever since the German maestro hung up his boots a couple of seasons ago.

A player like Enzo could replicate a similar sort of impact in dictating the tempo of the game, while also bringing the South American spirit.

It remains to be seen how much the Blues demand for Enzo. If it is a deal that fits within Los Blancos’ financial framework, this is a no-brainer, and it remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old wears Real Madrid’s royal white next season.
