After the 1-1 draw between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the Civitas Metropolitano, Diego Simeone hit out at Thibaut Courtois, claiming that the Belgian was at fault for ‘provoking’ Atleti fans which led them to throw objects at him.

“We all have to help. The people who threw those lighters, as also happened at the Bernabeu when Courtois was our player and he received a lighter on his head, are not doing well,” he said.

“But we, the protagonists, probably don’t help either when we underestimate people, we burden people, we provoke people and people get angry.”

Continuing, the Colchoneros’ boss added: “You can celebrate a goal, but you can’t celebrate it by looking at the stands, pointing at them and making faces at them, because then people get angry.”

No sanctions for Courtois

Following Simeone’s complaints, there were reports in the Spanish media suggesting that Courtois may face some sanction for “provoking the animosity of the public.” There was talk of a suspension for a period of four to 12 games.

However, now MARCA reports that there is no possibility of the Belgian goalkeeper being sanctioned.

Neither the referee’s report, nor the reports of the Spanish Football Federation delegate, nor the La Liga delegate point to the Real Madrid goalkeeper at any time.

Nobody has denounced, beyond Simeone’s speech, what Courtois did, an essential circumstance for a player in the world of football to be sanctioned at some point by the Competition Committee.

As such, there is no room for speculation about a possible punishment for the 32-year-old goalkeeper, who is currently out with a muscle injury.

In fact, the report states that within the Spanish Football Federation, no one has spoken about a possible punishment for Courtois. What’s more, the situation has even caused laughter.

As has been demonstrated already, Courtois reacted after receiving vile insults from the south end of the Metropolitano.
