After a solid stint with SL Benfica, Alvaro Carreras has taken his game up a notch this season since joining Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

The Merengues shelled out a sum of €50 million on the 22-year-old left-back and despite there being some initial concerns, the investment has proven to be worth every penny.

Carreras has delivered on expectations and then some, becoming a permanent fixture in Xabi Alonso’s plans at Real Madrid.

Despite that, a call-up to the Spain national team continues to evade Carreras, who has yet to make his senior debut for La Roja.

Knocking on the doors

Now, according to AS, Carreras is pushing hard for a spot in the Spain squad and if he keeps up his current performances a place in the roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup could well be within his reach.

Luis de la Fuente currently relies on two regulars: Marc Cucurella, an undisputed starter for the Spain coach, and Alejandro Grimaldo, who provides balance and attacking support when rotation is needed.

Behind them is Alejandro Balde, whom De la Fuente knows well and who is enjoying a good period with Barcelona.

However, Carreras’ form has not gone unnoticed in the Spain camp. Indeed, at Las Rozas there has been talk that the Real Madrid player could have been called up during the ongoing international break, although the coach ultimately chose to stick with his usual group.

Competition is intense, but the former Benfica player is clear about his target: earning a place in the senior national team. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, he knows this is his moment. If he maintains his level with Real Madrid, a call-up seems only a matter of time.
