Real Madrid have made some exciting additions to their youth and reserve ranks in the ongoing January transfer window.
The Merengues have signed talents like Adrian Arnu, Iker Doblas, Manex Rezola and Guille Gonzalez. More recently, Real Madrid also added Alexis Ciria, who arrived from the Sevilla youth academy.
However, it appears that the Spanish capital club are far from done with their transfer business on the youth front.
Indeed, according to AS, Real Madrid are set to battle with FC Barcelona for the signing of Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Martinez.
A versatile midfielder capable of playing as a No. 6, No. 8, or a No. 10, the 18-year-old starlet is attracting strong interest from several clubs.
However, it is Real Madrid and Barcelona who have taken the lead in the race by tabling offers to acquire the services of the Racing Santander starlet.
As per the report, the idea of both La Liga giants is to sign Sergio on loan until the end of the season for their reserve teams with an option to buy. However, they would be open to a permanent transfer should Racing insist on it.
Real Madrid want Sergio to bolster the Castilla ranks as they push for promotion from the Primera RFEF Division. Currently in the playoff positions (sixth), Julian Lopez de Lerma’s side hope to make a strong push in the second half of the season.
With the likes of Jorge Cestero and Thiago Pitarch on the first-team radar, adding another midfielder could be a smart move.
And, it remains to be seen if Sergio, who has seen his prominence in the Racing Santander first-team squad reduce, moves to Valdebebas.
