The controversial red card shown to Dean Huijsen by referee Jesus Gil Manzano left a bitter taste for Real Madrid even as they secured a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday.

The young centre-back was shown a direct red card for a foul on Mikel Oyarzabal, deeming it a last-man challenge, even though Eder Militao was in close vicinity and the ball was almost 40 yards away from the goal.

The fact that the VAR official did not even ask the referee to consult the pitchside monitor for what was clearly a glaring error has raised alarms.

Real Madrid confident red card will be overturned

Now, according to MARCA, Real Madrid are moving forward with full confidence regarding their appeal against the dismissal of Huijsen at Anoeta.

The Merengues strongly believe the straight red shown by Gil Manzano was unjustified and expect the RFEF Competition Committee to annul the suspension.

The club’s defence is built on two key arguments: that Militao was close enough to provide cover, and that the distance from goal, combined with the direction of the play, meant there was no clear goalscoring opportunity.

As such, there is total optimism at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid are confident Huijsen will be cleared and available for their next La Liga fixture against Espanyol.

Beyond the appeal, the Huijsen incident has already had repercussions within Spanish refereeing. Figueroa Vazquez, who was in charge of the VAR, is set to be sidelined from the next matchweek.

Following this, the feeling within the club is that the refereeing system itself has already acknowledged the mistake, and that it would only be logical for the same stance to be reflected in the committee’s ruling.
