Real Madrid have been linked with a surprise summer move for Sunderland defender Trai Hume.
Spanish reports say Hume is among several right-sided options under consideration as low-cost cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold. With Dani Carvajal expected to depart, the club are said to prefer a rotation option rather than a major outlay. The same reporting lists Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco’s Vanderson, and suggests Hume could cost about €22million, roughly £19million.
Any move appears unlikely for now, yet it highlights Hume’s rising reputation after another excellent season. His versatility, intensity and reliability have made the Northern Ireland defender a key figure under Régis Le Bris.
Hume came through Ballymena United and Linfield, made his senior Linfield debut in April 2019, then impressed on loan with hometown Ballymena before returning as first-choice right-back.
Sunderland signed him from Linfield in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He debuted a month later in a 2-1 defeat to Cheltenham Town and became a regular in 2022-23. He later signed an extension in 2023, then a long-term contract after promotion to the Premier League to 2030, and scored his first Premier League goal this season in the 4-3 loss to Aston Villa.
