The Spanish Football Federation’s Appeals Committee has confirmed the one-match suspension handed to Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen, rejecting the club’s appeal against the red card he received against Real Sociedad, reports COPE.
Following Huijsen’s sending off against Sociedad last week, Real Madrid had swiftly lodged an appeal, but it was rejected by the RFEF Disciplinary Committee.
As such, the Merengues took the matter to the Appeals Committee. Real Madrid had argued that the dismissal should be overturned, citing the precedent of Betis’ Antony, whose sanction was lifted after video evidence was presented.
The CTA had also acknowledged an error by the refereeing team in sending off the Real Madrid defender, but the Appeals Committee has upheld the red card.

The committee ruled that the footage in Huijsen’s case allowed for multiple interpretations, including the referee’s version reflected in the match report.
“The incident admits different interpretations, which excludes the existence of a manifest material error,” the committee’s verdict noted.
“Precisely for this reason, and as rightly indicated by the Technical Committee of Referees, a position this Committee shares, VAR acted correctly in not intervening, as it was not an action that could be considered a clear, obvious and manifest error.”
As such, Huijsen now is suspended for Saturday’s game against Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Following the Appeals Committee’s decision, Real Madrid will take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD) in the hope of getting Huijsen’s red card and suspension overturned.
