Even though the summer transfer window closed about a month ago, Ibrahima Konate has remained a hot prospect in the market.

The French defender’s contract at Liverpool expires at the end of the season, with the Premier League keen on renewing his contract.

However, Konate hasn’t shown any desire to renew the contract just yet and has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Spanish media has extensively reported that Konate is Real Madrid’s top defensive target and that the player will join the club on a Bosman deal next summer.

Konate hasn’t made a decision on his future

However, a recent report from The Athletic (h/t Defensa Central) has offered a key update on the future of the French international.

As per the report, Konate’s agents, through various intermediaries, have made it clear that the player has not made a final decision on his future yet.

This is a good development for Liverpool, as it implies that the Frenchman might still be open to the idea of renewing his contract at Anfield.

The report does add that Konate will make a final decision on his future in the coming months, ideally before the January transfer window.

It must be noted that Konate will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement from January onwards, provided he does not extend his contract at Liverpool.

Therefore, if Konate decides to move on from Anfield at the end of the season, Real Madrid will have the opportunity to make him sign a pre-contract agreement and confirm his arrival in January.

After all, Konate will be tracked by multiple clubs across Europe, making it all the move difficult for Real Madrid. Timing and networking, therefore, could be key, which is perhaps why Los Blancos have already harboured good relationship with the defender’s agents.
