Controversy once again took centre stage in La Liga as Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Girona ended in frustration, anger, and renewed debate over refereeing standards.
With the title race hanging in the balance, Los Blancos were left furious after a late incident involving Kylian Mbappe that could have dramatically changed the outcome of the match.
The defining moment came in the 88th minute, when Mbappe burst into the penalty area with Real Madrid pushing desperately for a winner.
After beating his marker, the French forward appeared to be struck in the face by Girona defender Victor Reis, sending him to the ground.
It looked, at first glance, like a clear penalty. However, referee Alberola Rojas waved play on, judging that there was no infringement.
The situation became even more contentious when VAR chose not to intervene, which effectively confirmed the on-field decision.
The reaction from within the Real Madrid camp, especially from Alvaro Arbeloa, but it was the club’s official channel, Real Madrid TV, that delivered the strongest response.

Opening their post-match analysis, the broadcaster did not hold back, stating,
“Madrid played poorly but also suffered the consequences of a disgraceful refereeing performance,” they began saying.
The criticism intensified as they broke down the incident frame by frame, insisting that the decision was beyond debate.
“We’re lucky to have plenty of replays, and in every one you can see that the incident is a clear penalty.
“A double penalty, in fact, because Victor Reis also tripped him with his leg. These are the consequences of Negreira.
“This is the Negreira League,” they added.
As such, the draw against Girona leaves Real Madrid trailing in the standings with six points, with Barcelona in a strong position to extend their lead further when they face Espanyol later today.
