With two years left on his deal Szoboszlai would fetch a high price in the market - perhaps as high as £100m - and that value will only decrease the longer he endures without a new deal.
It places sporting director Hughes in a delicate high-wire act - trying to ensure Szoboszlai signs a new contract on Liverpool’s terms while also facing up to the prospect that he might have to be sold before his value reduces to nothing.
- with Alvaro Arbeloa’s side eyeing a midfield rebuild of their own.
And now a report in Fichajes suggests the door could be open to a “win-win” swap deal involving Szoboszlai and a long-time Liverpool target.
Rodrygo Goes, 25, has been at Madrid since 2019 - winning two Champions League and several other honours in that time.
But the Brazilian has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu this season - making only six starts in the league before his current injury put him on the sidelines.
The winger is also out of contract in 2028 - and unlikely to sign a new one while he remains a bit-part player. Therefore the report states that Madrid would be open to the possibility of conducting talks over a swap deal involving Rodrygo and Szoboszlai.
Would this move benefit Liverpool?
Well the club are looking at acquiring a new winger this summer - amid concerns over Federico Chiesa and Mo Salah’s futures. Rodrygo would fit the bill in that regard - but Liverpool could avail of better Madrid players if a swap deal materialised.
Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni for example have caught the eye of Liverpool recruiters - and would certainly do a better job of filling a Szoboszlai-shaped hole in midfield.
