Martin Zubimendi’s name was once viewed as a natural fit for Real Madrid, particularly during Xabi Alonso’s time at the club

The Spanish midfielder was widely admired for his intelligence in possession, positional awareness and ability to dictate the tempo of games, making him one of the standout performers in La Liga during his years at Real Sociedad.

A year later, however, the picture looks very different.

According to Defensa Central, journalist Alberto Pereiro has dismissed any suggestion that Real Madrid could revive their interest in the Arsenal midfielder.

Despite previous admiration from within the club, a move to the Santiago Bernabeu is no longer being considered, despite the fact that Los Blancos are looking to sign a midfield organiser.

The latest Real Madrid transfer news effectively ends speculation that the club could return for a player they chose not to pursue when the opportunity first presented itself.

Real Madrid’s decision opened the door for Arsenal

Last summer, Zubimendi emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders following another outstanding campaign with Real Sociedad.

His performances attracted interest from several elite clubs, with Real Madrid frequently mentioned because of Xabi Alonso’s appreciation of the player.

Despite that admiration, Florentino Perez and the club’s hierarchy decided against making a formal move.

That hesitation allowed Arsenal to step in and complete the signing, investing close to €70 million to bring the Spain international to the Premier League.

At the time, many believed the transfer represented one of the smartest pieces of business in European football, with Zubimendi widely regarded as a midfielder capable of succeeding Rodri for the Spanish national team.

Speculation surrounding Zubimendi’s future resurfaced in recent weeks after a difficult first season in England, but Alberto Pereiro has poured cold water on any hopes of a move to Madrid.

Assessing the midfielder’s current situation, the journalist said, “Zubimendi is having a difficult summer and he is going to have an even more difficult year.”

When asked whether Real Madrid could emerge as a possible destination, Pereiro dismissed the idea completely, making it clear that the club is not planning to revisit their previous interest.

The update comes as Zubimendi looks to rediscover the level that made him one of Europe’s most highly rated midfielders.

Although his arrival at Arsenal generated significant excitement, his first year in the Premier League has not unfolded as many expected.
