After suffering a sobering 5-2 loss by city rivals Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid will be seeking redemption from their journey to Kazakhstan to take on Champions League debutants Kairat Almaty on Tuesday evening.
The painful defeat to Atletico brought to an end Real Madrid’s flawless seven-match winning start in all competitions, exposing some frailties in Xabi Alonso’s tactical setup, especially in dealing with set-piece situations and aerial threats.
Injuries have also complicated matters for Los Blancos. Captain Dani Carvajal faces a four-week absence after picking up a calf injury during the derby. Trent Alexander-Arnold remains out with a hamstring issue sustained versus Marseille, depriving the side of an experienced right-back. Key defender Antonio Rüdiger is not expected back until December due to his knee injury, while Ferland Mendy is still recovering from ongoing fitness problems.
There was some positive news concerning Éder Militão; initial concerns of a serious ankle injury during the derby were eased when scans revealed only significant bruising. Nonetheless, he has not made the trip as a precaution.
Jude Bellingham, who earned his first start of the season in the recent defeat, may see more minutes, and Eduardo Camavinga also logged considerable time off the bench. Rising star Endrick Felipe could make his Champions League debut, having been included in the squad in recent matches.
Possible Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois; Asencio, Huijsen, Carreras, Garcia; Valverde, Tchouameni; Mastantuono, Guler, Vinicius; Mbappe
5:45pm BST on Tuesday, 30th September.
