According to an update shared by Jose Luis Sanchez on El Chiringuito TV, it has come to light that Argentina want Franco Mastantuono to participate in the U-20 FIFA World Cup later this year.

While the prospect of representing his country on the global stage is undoubtedly exciting for the teenager, it could create significant problems for Real Madrid.

The 2025 U-20 World Cup will be held in Chile from 27 September to 19 October, with Argentina drawn into Group D alongside Italy, Australia, and Cuba.

Their campaign begins on 28 September against Cuba, followed by clashes with Australia and Italy on 1 and 4 October, respectively.

Matches Mastantuono will miss for Real Madrid

If Argentina advance to the final on 19 October, Mastantuono could end up missing as many as seven matches for Real Madrid.

This would include some high-profile fixtures, such as the all-important Madrid Derby against Atletico Madrid, a Champions League group game against Kairat, and the La Liga home clash with Villarreal.

The potential absence does not end there. Factoring in the preparation period before the tournament, Mastantuono could also be unavailable for Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against Marseille as well as the league match against Espanyol.

While only one game during the knockout round of the tournament would be against Getafe in La Liga, the build-up and continuity of training with the squad is just as crucial.

The knockout rounds of the U-20 World Cup begin on 7 October, meaning that if Argentina progress, Mastantuono would be out of action for Madrid until at least mid-October.

Fortunately for Los Blancos, Real Madrid hold the final say over the youngster’s participation.

Given that Mastantuono is already considered a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s project this season, there is a strong chance the club could decide to keep him available for club duties rather than release him for international youth competition.
