Bruno Fernandes did not appear for the second half as Man Utd were beaten at Villa Park
Ruben Amorim has said he fears Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes will be out “for a while” through injury.
Man United were dealt a major blow late in the first half of their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon when Fernandes pulled up cluthing his hamstring.
Fernandes was able to see out the remainder of the half but was replaced during the interval and watched the entire second half from the sidelines.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the defeat at Villa Park, Amorim delivered an update on the Portugal international, though has urged for caution until the midfielder undergoes tests.
"It is really strange. During this year, especially at this time, we have so many problems, but we have to cope with that,” the Man Utd boss said.
"I think it's soft tissue, so it's going to be a while. We'll see."
The loss of Fernandes was compounded by the absence of Kobbie Mainoo ahead of kick-off as the youngster was left out of the matchday squad after picking up a “small injury” in training.
Amorim said: “He got an injury in the last training.
"After training, he went to the doctor. He got something in his calf.
"We are going to assess but he is out of this game.
"Of course [it is bad timing], not just for the team but for him to have this problem. These are reminders that we need to focus on everything we can control and leave the rest to the destiny.
"He is going to be fine in the few weeks, I think, I don't know. Let's focus on the players that we have and are ready to play."
Man United are back in action on Boxing Day as they welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford but it remains to be seen what shape Amorim’s squad is in for the fixture.
