Liverpool have got many problems

We saw poor individual displays from Ibrahima Konate and Alexis Mac Allister once again.

Conor Bradley was run ragged by Jeremy Doku just four days after locking down Vinicius Junior. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch appeared exhausted. Hugo Ekitike barely figured. The game passed Florian Wirtz and Mo Salah by.

The list could go on.

Arne Slot has a hell of a job on his hands to reinvigorate this season but there is reason for optimism. All hope is not lost.

For one thing although it looks unlikely that the league title can be retained the club actually look well set for a decent Champions League campaign.

Liverpool well-equipped for Europe

They have beaten Atletico Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid already.

“There’s a school of thought that Liverpool will be better equipped to mount a serious challenge for the Champions League rather than domestic honours this season,” reads a report from James Pearce in the Athletic.

“They are handily placed to reach the last 16 with three wins out of four and given their current period of transition as summer signings adjust to their new surroundings, they should be a much stronger force come March when it’s knockout football and relationships have developed further.”

Time to put smiles back on Liverpool faces

And then there’s the injury issues that the club have been contending with. Alexander Isak has been a non-entity thus far - suffering another upper leg injury and scoring only once in seven appearances.

The 26-year-old is away with Sweden this week and will be hoping to play himself into match sharpness. The end of the international window will also see the return of Alisson Becker from injury - as well as Jeremie Frimpong.

With those two coming back, things can only get better.

The nature of the City defeat is always going to hurt but Liverpool fans have got to keep their heads up for now.

A decent turnaround performance against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and PSV in Europe could see smiles back on faces around the club.
