The Canaries and their fanbase will have mixed feelings about Rowe's strike against Lyon.

Former Norwich City winger Jonathan Rowe made the headlines with his winning goal for Marseille away at Lyon.

Ex-Southampton centre-back Duje Ćaleta-Car scored the opening goal for the hosts, but goals from Pol Lirola and Ulisses Garcia looked to have won the game for Roberto De Zerbi's side.

There was a twist during the third minute of stoppage time when Rayan Cherki levelled the game and at that point, the game seemed to be destined for a draw.

But the away side didn't give up in their quest to win three points, with the ball being launched into the opposition's half from kick-off.

Lucas Perri's mis-kick found its way to Rowe, who controlled the ball well, showed real composure, used his pace and movement well and fired the ball into the net from the edge of the box.

This was Rowe's first goal for the Ligue 1 outfit - and it proved to be the winning goal in the end - allowing De Zerbi's men to retain a place at the top end of the French top tier.

Rowe may not have enjoyed the most eventful start to life at his new club before that, but that goal is a moment he will never forget, and the Englishman will be hoping that this is the start of a special journey for him under De Zerbi, following his £14m loan-to-buy move from Norwich.

A key factor that helps Norwich and their supporters to be happy about Rowe's moment is the fact it didn't take place in the Championship.

The wide player had been linked with a move to Leeds United during the summer window and their interest seemed to be serious, but the Whites didn't manage to get a deal over the line in the end.

With Rowe in France, the Canaries don't have to worry about the impact their former player could have on them.

It must also be said that his goodbye message on social media probably got quite a few Norwich fans back onside, having withdrawn from their squad ahead of their opening day clash against Oxford United in August.

With the player establishing himself as a fan favourite at Carrow Road, many people in Norfolk, including the fans, will be happy to see him finally get off the mark.

After all, he is an academy graduate and one of the Canaries' own.

Also, the fact the English side have a 25% sell-on clause included means they will benefit if he does well and is sold on for a decent amount in the future.

And that's another reason why Norwich and their fans will be hoping that the 21-year-old thrives in France.

This goal is also one that must come as a source of frustration for the Canaries.

Rowe only enjoyed one brilliant season at a senior level with the club - and the fact he wasn't able to shine for longer at Carrow Road is surely upsetting for the Norfolk outfit.

But after making such a good impact last term, he will continue to be a big miss, especially with other attacking assets also leaving the club during the previous transfer window.

With Adam Idah, Gabriel Sara and Abu Kamara all sealing summer moves away from the club, Rowe could have been a very useful asset.

The 21-year-old could have also helped Norwich to secure another top-six finish at the end of this season, considering the quality he has, and the fact he isn't at Carrow Road anymore is upsetting for some supporters.

Whether others can step up to the plate in his place remains to be seen, but the English second-tier side could have benefitted from retaining him, with the player showing that he can step up in crucial moments and provide the quality needed to win extra points for his team.
