Reece James is set to miss England’s 2026 World Cup last-16 clash against co-hosts Mexico this evening.

The Chelsea captain has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury sustained against Ghana in the group stage.

James is yet to return to full training with Thomas Tuchel’s squad and sat out the final training session ahead of the meeting with Mexico. He is currently undergoing an individual training programme in the hope he can feature later in the tournament, should England progress.

England take on the co-hosts at the Azteca, in what promises to be a difficult task. Mexico have won all four games at this summer’s tournament and possess a formidable record at their iconic home stadium. The fixture will kick-off at 1am BST on Monday 6th July.

There was better news for Tuchel, with Declan Rice set to be passed fit. Jarell Quansah has also returned to full training and could replace Djed Spence at right-back. Quansah missed the win over DR Congo with a hamstring issue.
