Chelsea right-back Reece James could return to action by the end of this month or at the beginning of May, according to The Guardian.

The Chelsea captain picked up another hamstring injury and has missed the club’s last three matches.

The England international (22 caps) managed to stay fit for an extended period following a long battle with persistent injuries.

Unfortunately, he suffered a big blow just days after he signed a contract extension with the Blues.

There were initial fears that James would be out for up to two months and might not play again this season.

Thankfully, that is not the case. Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior will hope to have James back ready for the final key matches of the season.

The Blues are looking to secure a place in the top five in the Premier League and clinch the FA Cup title along the way.

They need all hands on deck, particularly James’. Able to fill in adeptly at both right-back and in midfield, he has contributed two goals and seven assists in 36 appearances.

In the Premier League, he has helped keep four clean sheets in 27 outings, winning 65% of his aerial and 56% of his ground duels.

However, Rosenior must learn from his predecessor, Enzo Maresca, how to manage James.

He is not a player you can throw into the starting XI week in, week out and expect to hold up physically.

His quality is undeniable, but so too is his injury record, and Chelsea have already seen the consequences of overreliance.

Managing his minutes will be just as important as utilising his versatility.

That means picking the right moments, rotating him in less-demanding fixtures, and easing him back after setbacks.

He must also resist the temptation to lean on him in every high-stakes encounter.

James can be a difference-maker for Chelsea in the run-in, but only if he’s kept fit and firing.

Burn him out again, and Chelsea risk losing one of their most influential players at the most crucial stage.
