Abel Ferreira was sent off after Palmeiras beat Fluminense 2-1 at Arena Barueri on Wednesday, with the referee citing rude and gross conduct towards the officiating team.
According to Globo.com, referee Felipe Fernandes de Lima wrote in his match report that he dismissed Abel for confronting assistant number one Fernanda Gomes Antunes and fourth official Luis Tisne, gesturing aggressively and clapping sarcastically, while using repeated expletives, including calling the assistant blind and accusing the officials of never seeing anything. He added that staff had to restrain the coach as he left the pitch.
Abel gave his account afterwards. He said a late throw-in he felt was clearly Palmeiras’ was awarded to the visitors, he protested and believed the fourth official should know better. He referenced being sent off by Claus in the previous game for clapping and questioned where he could clap if not in a stadium.
He also said he complained when a goal-kick was changed to a corner and noted VAR does not intervene on such calls. Abel added that everyone can make mistakes, that referees sometimes speak harshly, which he said happened at half-time. He suggested the fourth official took offence and that it was the fourth official who ordered his dismissal.
He must now serve a suspension for Palmeiras’ next Brasileiro match on 15 March against Vasco, and assistant João Martins will sign the match report.
