Referee Anderson Daronco went to the VAR monitor to assess a possible obscene gesture by Bobadilla during São Paulo’s celebrations after Luciano scored on 40 minutes. He then chose not to punish the midfielder.
According to Globo.com, Daronco said over the stadium microphone at Neo Química Arena that the São Paulo player was simply celebrating and did not touch his genitalia, so he would show no card.
Corinthians players protested heavily at the call. They pointed to two recent dismissals in comparable incidents, Allan against Fluminense and André against Palmeiras, when the players did put their hands on their genitalia.
The final minutes of the first half also brought a heated confrontation between the sides after a Corinthians fan struck Calleri on the arm with an electronic cigarette during the goal celebration.
Matheus Bidu, Gabriel Paulista, Sabino and Calleri were booked in the aftermath.
