Régis Le Bris said Sunderland have rallied around Romaine Mundle and shown their values after the winger suffered alleged racist abuse following the 3-1 defeat to Fulham.

The club issued a statement on Sunday condemning vile messages sent to the 22-year-old on social media, and Northumbria Police have opened an investigation. Mundle was among several Premier League players targeted over the weekend.

There is no place for racism or abuse in football or anywhere, and Sunderland’s stance centres on respect, inclusion and diversity. The reaction inside the dressing room and across the city has reflected those values, with team-mates and the wider community rallying to him.

In last Sunday’s statement, Sunderland vowed to take the strongest action available against anyone identified. It also set out that those individuals do not represent the club or community. The club is working with relevant authorities and online platforms to identify those responsible.

Mundle also faces a fitness setback after a hamstring issue late in the Fulham game, with surgery under assessment. It might be a difficult injury and he might be out for a few weeks, maybe a month, with further tests to follow. It is still too early to say if it is the same issue as before, and early indications are not positive.
