Régis Le Bris praised Lutsharel Geertruida after recalling him to Sunderland’s starting XI on Saturday, the defender clipping the post from the edge of the box in the second half. His return followed Dan Ballard’s suspension and marked his first start since March’s Tyne-Wear derby win against Newcastle United.
According to Sky Sports Germany, a decision had been made on Friday that Geertruida would not stay at Sunderland next season.
Le Bris said it was the right moment to bring the 25-year-old back and felt the display justified the call. He added that Luke had had three or four games in a row, did well at times then found it harder, so it was an opportunity for Lucha.
On the exit claim, Le Bris said he did not know, noting that at present Geertruida is a Sunderland player who did well and that there are still two games to play. He said the defender would be with them until the end of June and that it is too early to talk about next season, with any decision lying between the player, the club and, in this context, another club.
The report said Sunderland would not trigger the €23m option to buy and that Geertruida would first return to Leipzig, while a permanent solution is being sought. It added that initial enquiries had been made and there is strong interest across Europe’s top five leagues.
