Robin Roefs will make his first pre-season appearance when Sunderland face Wrexham on Sunday, the final game of their US tour. Wilson Isidor, absent from the 1-0 loss to Leeds United, is set to miss out again.
The Black Cats take on Phil Parkinson's side in Pennsylvania, kick-off five pm BST, with Roefs back after World Cup duty with the Netherlands. According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris said Isidor has returned to the UK for a personal matter, which he described as not major at this stage, and should rejoin training on Wearside next week.
Le Bris plans to mirror the Leeds United friendly, starting a strong XI then rotating heavily around half-time or the hour. He said game time would be managed, with players likely to get 45 or, if possible, 60 minutes.
He expects some fatigue after a demanding training block, though he is encouraged by their progress ahead of the Premier League kick-off later this month.
The head coach said they are building on last season's culture, from a solid defensive base, counter-attacking threat and set-piece strength to a more balanced approach by the end. He added that, even with World Cup absentees, those habits feel stronger, and returning players will be eased back. He said they will be back in England with four or five new players, including Granit and Chemsdine, with reconnections building progressively.
