Regis Le Bris has built Sunderland’s Premier League surge on a tight core, with promotion winner Trai Hume logging a team-high 2,585 minutes and earning praise for his versatility.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats resume after the international break with a home game against struggling Tottenham Hotspur.
That follows their historic Tyne-Wear derby win at arch rivals Newcastle United. They are now in the mix for European football for only the second time in their history, the first since Bob Stokoe led them into the Cup Winners Cup after the 1973 FA Cup final win over Leeds United.
Momentum from last season’s Championship play-off final victory against Sheffield United, plus a successful summer window, has underpinned the rise. Signings Robin Roefs, Omar Alderete, Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey have been integral.
Based on minutes played, the most-used XI reads: Roefs 2,520, Nordi Mukiele 2,165, Alderete 2,356, Dan Ballard 2,008, Hume 2,585, Xhaka 2,273, Noah Sadiki 2,297, Habib Diarra 1,103, Enzo Le Fee 2,306, Brobbey 1,370, Chemsdine Talbi 1,330.
Le Bris has highlighted Hume’s range across the back line and beyond, noting he can operate on either flank, further forward or in midfield, and slot into a back three. Against stronger sides, especially away, Hume helps the team drop naturally into a five-four-one without the ball. In possession, his capacity to move wide or inside, even step into a double pivot near the 10 pocket, makes him unpredictable and valuable.
