One reliable transfer news insider has been speaking out this week and believes he knows what calibre of new striker that Chelsea are looking at.
Chelsea have been linked with many new strikers over the last couple of years, but they have only signed Nicolas Jackson who let’s face it, is a great player but still young and a bit raw. Marc Guiu also looks good but he needs a good loan move to develop some more first. And Christopher Nkunku is NOT a striker despite what anyone might say and is also seemingly up for sale, so should not even be talked about when we speak about Chelsea strikers.
Jackson alone is not enough, and Chelsea absolutely should be prioritising signing a new one up top as well as him.
But the question has always been, what kind of striker will they go for? Will it be someone who will come in and compete and potentially bench Jackson? Or will it be a striker to back Jackson up? And in all of this, What would Liam Delap, who was once again heavily linked with Chelsea earlier today by this same reporter actually, be classed as? Backup or competition?
Delap might be the answer
Matt Law, who put that report out on Delap earlier, said in the same Podcast today on London is Blue:
“If and when Chelsea do go for a striker, I think it will be out-and-out competition for Nicolas Jackson rather than a bench warmer-type backup. I’m not saying Haaland or something, but someone who can go in the first team and challenge Nico.”
This is smart, and very good news and needed. Jackson needs to be challenged more, and Chelsea need a different option up top, a different profile of striker.
