Vasco have moved towards an agreement with Renato Gaúcho to become head coach 10 days after dismissing Fernando Diniz, allowing the club to refocus on wider squad planning, according to Globo.com.

The search for a new coach had been treated as urgent, with other matters paused. Before Diniz departed, Vasco were monitoring the market for a holding midfielder, and Coutinho’s exit added a need for a midfielder.

The international transfer window closed on Tuesday, but clubs may still sign players who featured in Brazil’s state championships until 27 March.

The hierarchy intend to consult the new coach to map targets within that domestic period, though the priority is seen as lifting the performance of the current squad.

More substantial investment is viewed as likelier in the mid-year window. For now the club are targeting loans or players at the end of their contracts, and a major outlay on a starter is considered unlikely.

Since December, 16 departures have trimmed costs and freed space on the wage bill for selective additions.

Six players have arrived, Brenner, Hinestroza, Saldivia, Spinelli, Cuiabano and Johan Rojas. The club also paid 1.5 million euros to Galatasaray to extend Cuesta’s loan to the end of the year, and exercised an option to buy Andrés Gómez for a little over 4.5 million euros for 60% of his rights.
