Renato Gaúcho’s arrival at Vasco could aid Matheus França, who first worked with him in Flamengo’s senior set-up. On loan from Crystal Palace until June, the midfielder wearing the number nine shirt has endured a poor run at São Januário.
According to Globo.com, he first stepped up under Rogério Ceni in early 2021 in a Libertadores match against Vélez, then became a full member of the senior squad under Renato.
Late that year, aged 17, he was regularly called into training after winning the Under-17 Copa do Brasil and Brasileiro. He did not play under Renato, though he was listed in Brasileirão squads.
He began 2022 with the first team, playing 23 games and scoring six goals. The following season he joined Crystal Palace for 20 million euros, around R$ 104 million at the time.
Since arriving at Vasco he has not found rhythm, recording 21 appearances with no direct goal contributions. He was even on the bench when Fernando Diniz used a reserve side in the Carioca group stage.
Inside the club, the hierarchy believe he could be contributing more. Their view at the time of the deal was of a player capable of helping the starting XI.
