Chelsea’s latest transfer thinking points towards a familiar conclusion. Elite teams eventually arrive at the same question, can they trust their goalkeeper to deliver trophies?
According to reporting from the Mirror, Chelsea are considering a move for Porto captain Diogo Costa, a player who has been admired across Europe for several years and who was once strongly linked with Manchester United.

With Xabi Alonso now tasked with rebuilding Chelsea following a disappointing 10th place finish last season, strengthening key positions has become a priority.

Goalkeeper appears to be near the top of that list.
Diogo Costa has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most complete goalkeepers.
At 25, he already combines leadership, consistency and top level experience. Porto have benefitted enormously from his development, particularly as he emerged through their academy system.
The numbers reinforce his standing.
Last season, Costa kept 26 clean sheets in 53 appearances and conceded only 13 league goals across 31 matches.

Those are statistics associated with elite performers.
Chelsea have invested heavily in almost every area of the pitch in recent years, yet uncertainty between the posts has remained a recurring issue.
Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have both been entrusted with opportunities, but neither has fully established themselves as an undisputed first choice.

That uncertainty can have wider consequences.
Teams aspiring to challenge for Premier League titles rarely carry questions over their goalkeeper.
Costa offers a different profile entirely. He is already Porto captain, Portugal’s number one and a player accustomed to operating under pressure.
Porto reportedly value him at around €60 million, approximately £51 million, although a strong World Cup campaign could increase that figure further.
Chelsea will be aware that waiting too long may come with additional financial consequences.
Manchester United’s previous interest only strengthens Costa’s reputation.
The club seriously explored signing him before ultimately recruiting Andre Onana as David de Gea’s successor.
That decision has repeatedly come under scrutiny.
The Mirror notes that United instead opted to sign Senne Lammens this summer, leaving Costa available for other interested parties.

Sometimes transfer opportunities reappear years later, only for different clubs to benefit.
Chelsea could now be in position to capitalise.
Chelsea are unlikely to have a free run at the Portuguese international.
Paris Saint Germain reportedly remain interested after uncertainty emerged around their own goalkeeping hierarchy.
Competition often forces clubs into quicker decisions.
Chelsea know this better than most, particularly after paying a world record £71.6 million for Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018.
Costa represents another significant investment, but arguably one carrying far less risk.
For Alonso, building a spine capable of sustaining success may begin with finding the right goalkeeper.
For Chelsea, this feels like a transfer that simply makes sense.
There is no desire to repeatedly criticise Robert Sanchez or Filip Jorgensen because both have shown flashes of quality. However, supporters have spent too many seasons debating who should be number one instead of feeling confident about the position.
Elite clubs remove uncertainty.
Diogo Costa looks like somebody who would instantly elevate the entire team.
His leadership is perhaps the most appealing aspect. Chelsea have assembled an exciting young squad, but leadership remains a work in progress across several positions.
A goalkeeper who already captains Porto and regularly performs for Portugal brings something valuable.
There is also an element of frustration attached to this report.
Chelsea have spent enormous sums assembling this squad, yet supporters still feel there are obvious gaps that should have been addressed earlier.
That said, Alonso arriving creates fresh optimism.
If this is the calibre of player he wants, then supporters will be encouraged by the direction of travel.
The competition from PSG should also act as a warning.
Chelsea cannot afford another drawn out saga that ends with hesitation and rising valuations.
If Costa is genuinely the preferred target, supporters will expect the club to move decisively.
For many Chelsea fans, this feels less like a luxury signing and more like a necessity.
