Jordan Henderson is once again on the move. As first reported by Sky Sports News, the former Liverpool captain has left Ajax and is now a free agent after choosing not to trigger the 12-month extension in his deal.
Henderson’s short stint in the Eredivisie comes to an end. This latest development paves the way for a potential return to the Premier League, where his leadership, experience, and engine room grit are still seen as valuable assets.

“He is now a free agent after opting not to trigger the 12-month extension in his contract,” reported Sky Sports.
The 34-year-old midfielder is not merely looking for a final payday. Sky Sports understands that at least two Premier League clubs are interested in securing his signature, with Henderson reportedly keen to play regular football in a competitive environment.
His motivation? A place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup under new manager Thomas Tuchel. It’s believed Henderson is determined to remain relevant at the international level, and a return to the English top flight could significantly boost his chances.
“He is understood to want to join a club where he will play regularly in order to give himself the best possible chance of being part of the World Cup squad next summer.”
While the names of the interested clubs have not been disclosed, speculation is rife. Sunderland makes sense with a return to his home club, and you could speculate that Burnley or Leeds would want Premier League experience after promotion.
Having earned over 500 appearances in English football and captained Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League titles, his influence on and off the pitch is hard to question.
“At least two Premier League clubs are interested in signing him,” the Sky Sports report confirms.
Henderson’s return to English football may not stir universal excitement, but it certainly carries intrigue. His decisions over the past 18 months—from his controversial move to Saudi Arabia to his abrupt exit—have raised eyebrows, yet few can doubt his desire to keep competing at the top level.
For Liverpool fans, Jordan Henderson’s latest career turn invites mixed emotions. On one hand, supporters retain immense respect for a captain who led the Reds through their most successful period in decades. From the night against Barcelona to lifting the Premier League trophy in 2020, Hendo’s legacy at Anfield is etched in gold.
That said, his decision to leave Ajax so soon after arriving raises concerns. Ajax offered a respectable platform to rediscover form in Europe, but it seems his mind is already set on representing England next summer. His international ambitions are admirable, but it’s fair to ask whether this move represents clarity or confusion in his career plan.
