Liverpool’s dependable deputy goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, has reportedly informed the club of his intention to move on, refusing to sign a new contract at Anfield. According to TEAMtalk, the Irishman is eager to establish himself as a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere, with Chelsea and Newcastle leading a four-club race for his signature.
Kelleher has been a standout performer whenever called upon, earning Arne Slot’s trust with consistent displays in Alisson Becker’s absence. The 26-year-old has made 17 appearances this season, conceding just 15 goals—a testament to his reliability. Yet, despite his performances, Kelleher remains behind Alisson in the pecking order, a situation that appears to have fuelled his desire for regular first-team football.

Ben Jacobs, writing for TEAMtalk, confirmed in December that Kelleher was planning to leave, noting that Fiorentina and Leeds United were also monitoring the situation. Leeds’ interest hinges on their potential promotion to the Premier League, while Fiorentina are considering Kelleher as a long-term replacement for David de Gea.
“Both Jacobs and TEAMtalk’s own transfer insider Fraser Fletcher can confirm interest from both Chelsea and Newcastle is genuine,” with both clubs seeking to strengthen their goalkeeping options. Newcastle’s Eddie Howe is reportedly a fan of Burnley’s James Trafford, but Kelleher remains a serious target. Meanwhile, Chelsea, having opted against signing a new goalkeeper in January, are expected to prioritise this position in the summer transfer window.
Despite Slot’s admiration for Kelleher, Alisson remains Liverpool’s undisputed No.1. As such, the club appears resigned to losing the Irishman, hoping to secure a fee between £20m and £25m for the 20-cap Republic of Ireland international. Giorgi Mamardashvili’s impending arrival at Anfield further complicates the goalkeeping landscape, making Kelleher’s exit seem inevitable.
While it’s disappointing to see a homegrown talent like Kelleher set to leave, his ambition to become a No.1 is understandable. Liverpool fans have watched him step up in crucial matches, and his composure between the sticks has been nothing short of impressive. However, with Alisson’s world-class status, Kelleher’s chances of becoming Liverpool’s first choice were always slim.
The reported fee of £20m-£25m represents good business for the club, especially considering Kelleher’s limited game time. That said, his departure highlights the challenge of retaining quality backup players who deserve more opportunities.
With Mamardashvili’s arrival, Liverpool seem prepared for life after Kelleher. But his presence will be missed, both on and off the pitch. Wherever he goes, Kelleher has proven he has what it takes to succeed as a first-choice goalkeeper.
