The latest reporting from BILD suggests Yan Diomande is now expected to remain at RB Leipzig this summer, a situation with wider consequences for Liverpool’s plans and for any possible pursuit of Bradley Barcola.

At face value, this is a story about one deal not happening. In reality, it is more significant than that. Liverpool had been tracking a market where outcomes were linked. Even if Diomande was leaning elsewhere, his exit from Leipzig could have helped trigger movement involving other elite wide attackers. Without that first domino falling, the landscape changes quickly.

It leaves Liverpool in a less comfortable position than they would have wanted at this stage of the window, especially with Andoni Iraola still waiting for further additions after stepping into the role of head coach.

Yan Diomande Price Holds Firm

The central issue appears straightforward. RB Leipzig’s valuation has proved too high for the clubs circling. The figure reported is €120m, and neither Liverpool nor Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to meet it. As a result, Leipzig are understood to be operating from a position of strength and, barring a major shift, Diomande is likely to stay where he is.

That matters because Liverpool had reason to monitor the situation closely, even after it became clear the player’s preference was elsewhere. Had Paris Saint-Germain pushed through a deal for Diomande, there was a belief in the market that it might have created room for movement around Barcola. Now, with Diomande expected to remain in Germany, PSG have less reason to consider a sale.

For Liverpool, that makes an already difficult chase even more complicated. Yankuba Minteh is one player many admire. His pace, aggression and one-against-one threat make him a highly attractive option, and his ceiling is obvious. But Liverpool would need to be convinced he is ready to contribute consistently in a side expected to challenge at the highest level from the first week of the campaign.

Further down the list are talented younger forwards such as Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Carlos Forbs, Ibrahim Mbaye and Said El Mala. All have promise, all are well regarded, and all could develop into excellent players. The concern from a Liverpool perspective is that this is not a summer for purely developmental solutions if the aim is to equip Iraola with a squad ready to respond quickly.

That is why the Diomande situation resonates beyond Leipzig. When one premium option effectively closes, and another becomes harder to prise away, the quality of the remaining pool can drop away fast. Liverpool may still act decisively, but this is now shaping up as one of the key judgement calls of their summer.

From a worried Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report feels like more bad news in a window that already has too much uncertainty around it. The frustrating part is not simply missing out on one player, it is the sense that Liverpool are waiting for other clubs to decide their fate. That never feels like a position of strength for a club that should be proactive in the market.

Barcola sounds exciting, and Diomande clearly had a knock-on effect on that situation, but supporters will ask a fair question, why does every route seem to depend on something else happening first? Liverpool have known for months that fresh attacking options were needed. If the club genuinely believe a right winger is one of the defining needs of the summer, there has to be a stronger plan than hoping a chain reaction opens the right door.

There is also a real worry about the alternatives. Minteh is talented, and the younger names mentioned all have potential, but Liverpool are not in a place where they should be gambling on projects alone. Iraola needs players who can deliver now, not in two years. Fans will back smart recruitment, but patience wears thin when rivals are moving and Liverpool still look stuck between first-choice targets and fallback ideas. At some point, this window needs a decisive turn.
