Liverpool are reportedly preparing a major defensive investment ahead of the summer transfer window, with Mundo Deportivo claiming the club have set their sights on Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.

The Serie A defender, under contract until 2028, has been identified as a prime target as the Reds look to strengthen their back line following Giovanni Leoni’s long-term injury and growing speculation surrounding Ibrahima Konaté’s future. According to the report, Liverpool are “aware of his value” and readying a bid in the region of €100 million to test Inter’s resolve.

With Arne Slot keen to establish a balanced defensive unit, Bastoni’s composure and leadership have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders. Club sources suggest Liverpool are willing to pursue a deal if funds are freed through potential summer exits.
For Liverpool fans, this report feels both bold and exciting. Alessandro Bastoni represents the calibre of defender that aligns perfectly with the club’s ambition under Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes. He is comfortable in possession, strong in aerial duels, and tactically astute, qualities that would elevate Liverpool’s defensive options, particularly after recent injuries and uncertainty around Konaté’s future.
However, supporters will be cautious about the reported €100 million valuation. While Bastoni’s pedigree is unquestionable, Liverpool have historically been selective when spending heavily on defenders, prioritising long-term fit and leadership potential. That said, the Italian international would bring the same kind of reliability Virgil van Dijk offered when he arrived in 2018, a transformational signing at a critical time.
Fans also recognise the broader context: this summer’s window could define the next era at Anfield. If Bastoni were to join, it would signal Liverpool’s intent to compete at the highest level of European football, both in the Premier League and Champions League.
