Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool Future Under Scrutiny

Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa faces an uncertain future at Anfield, with TeamTalk reporting that a January exit remains a “definitely possible” scenario. Despite his public commitment to the club, Arne Slot’s selection choices have raised questions about where the Italian winger fits into the current project.

Chiesa’s Challenging Start at Anfield

Chiesa arrived from Juventus in the summer of 2024 with big expectations. Having shone in Serie A and played a pivotal role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, he looked set to bring creativity and energy to Liverpool’s attack. Instead, injuries and fierce competition limited him to just 14 appearances last season, producing two goals and two assists.

This campaign has offered glimpses of his ability. He has already scored once in the Premier League, striking in the 4-2 win over Bournemouth on opening day. Yet, Arne Slot’s decision to omit him from Liverpool’s Champions League squad in favour of teenager Rio Ngumoha spoke volumes about the Dutchman’s current plans.

Slot’s Stance on Chiesa

Slot addressed the difficult call when leaving Chiesa out:

“Of course, that is one of the most difficult things you have to do as a manager. For a player not to play, it is not always easy to tell them but not to be in the squad is always more difficult.”

The Liverpool boss did, however, praise Chiesa’s attitude and commitment:

“He gave me the answer you want to hear from a player, that he will be there to help the team in the cups and in the league.”

Transfer insider Dean Jones also told TeamTalk:

“There will be opportunities in January for him to move and a switch back to Italy will definitely be possible – but the player has to be sure that the team fits him properly in order to reach his own heights and produce his best form.”

Return to Serie A on the Cards?

Sources suggest that Chiesa remains deeply attached to Liverpool but is conscious of the limited opportunities. With Serie A clubs monitoring his situation, January could represent a crossroads in his career. His next decision will be crucial — move for guaranteed minutes in Italy or continue fighting for his place under Slot.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, the Chiesa situation feels bittersweet. On one hand, there’s respect for the professionalism he’s shown, particularly in handling the disappointment of Champions League exclusion. Fans recognise the value of a senior player who is willing to contribute when called upon, and Slot himself has hinted that Chiesa’s role could grow if fitness and form align.

Yet, there’s also a sense of realism. Liverpool’s wide options are stacked, with Cody Gakpo ,Ekitike & potentially Wirtz already battling for minutes, and Rio Ngumoha emerging as a prodigious talent. Chiesa, despite his pedigree, hasn’t yet stamped his authority in red. Supporters may sympathise, but they know that competition is ruthless at a club aiming to retain its Premier League crown.

A January departure back to Italy would not shock many fans. There would be disappointment — after all, Chiesa’s signing carried real excitement — but perhaps also relief if it opened the door for Liverpool to reinvest or for a younger player to step forward. The bigger question for supporters is whether Chiesa ever got a fair run of games to prove himself, or whether circumstances conspired against him.

Ultimately, Liverpool fans want what’s best for the team. If Chiesa thrives elsewhere, most will wish him well, but his story at Anfield may remain one of unfulfilled potential unless something changes in the coming months.
