Liverpool’s interest in Manu Kone has resurfaced and, on the face of it, this feels logical rather than dramatic. According to The Kopite View, the club are back looking closely at the Roma midfielder as Andoni Iraola continues reshaping a squad that badly needed direction after last season’s collapse.

The fee, at around £47m, would be significant but not reckless. Fans have seen enough expensive misses across Europe to know price alone proves nothing. What matters is fit. On that front, Kone appears to tick plenty of boxes.

There is also the simple reality that beating Manchester United to a player always adds a little extra edge. That should never be the reason to sign somebody, but if Liverpool rate him highly, there is no reason to sit back and let a rival dictate the pace.

Supporters will probably want more than one midfield addition before the window shuts, especially after the turbulence of the past year. Still, if Kone is one of the names under serious consideration, that feels like a smart place to start.
