Serge Gnabry’s contract saga in Munich has opened the door to one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the coming summer. With his deal set to expire, Bayern would like to retain him, especially after his strong first half of the season and increased importance during Jamal Musiala’s absence. However, his current annual salary of 17 to 19 million euros places him among the club’s highest earners, a level the hierarchy is unwilling to maintain. As reported, Gnabry would need to accept reduced terms to stay.

Elite clubs are naturally watching the situation. Juventus have been named by La Gazzetta dello Sport and BILD’s Christian Falk reinforced this on the Bayern Insider podcast, saying: “Juventus is looking for reinforcements on the wing and has made inquiries.” The Italian side remain cautious and Falk added: “The salary is currently a major deterrent for them.”
Falk also revealed that Liverpool are monitoring developments. His line, “Liverpool also has him on their shortlist. But for them too, that’s a lot of money,” captures the dilemma. The Merseyside club admire Gnabry yet must weigh the financial implications. Still, the fact that he may arrive on a free transfer could shift calculations. As Falk noted privately, clubs feel “the saved transfer fee could allow more flexibility on salary.”
If Gnabry does depart as a free agent, both Juventus and Liverpool will sense opportunity. In a market where value is increasingly prized, an experienced wide forward of his calibre rarely becomes available without a fee.
This report will light up fanbases across Europe and reactions will differ wildly. Liverpool supporters, excited after recent squad evolution, will be intrigued by the idea of adding a proven wide attacker with Champions League pedigree. Some will see Gnabry as a statement signing, especially with the prospect of no transfer fee involved. Others will be sceptical, particularly given the salary figures quoted. They may worry that committing such a high wage to a 30 year old could unsettle the club’s existing structure or place pressure on younger attackers still finding their rhythm under Arne Slot.
Juventus fans will likely feel a blend of hope and concern. The club has struggled to attract top tier offensive players in recent years and Gnabry represents an instant upgrade. Yet the Italian supporters will share management’s caution over the salary. Some will argue that securing a free transfer offsets the risk, while others will question whether investing so heavily in wages for a player who has battled inconsistencies at Bayern is the right approach.
From a broader football perspective, many supporters will be shocked that Bayern appear prepared to let such a player enter the final months of his deal without resolution. Plenty will expect more twists in this story, particularly if Gnabry continues to shine through the second half of the campaign.
