Liverpool are looking at Sergio Arribas, and on the face of it this is a very logical move. According to IDEAL, the Almeria attacker is firmly on the club’s radar as Andoni Iraola shapes his squad for the new season.
There is context here. Iraola has walked into a difficult first transfer window at Anfield, and early setbacks have already arrived. Missing out on Yan Diomande was hardly ideal, particularly if Liverpool had identified him as a priority wide option. That means the recruitment team must pivot quickly, and the Spanish market is clearly one area they trust.
Arribas is 24, productive, tactically flexible and developed in a strong technical environment at Real Madrid. Those are not minor details. Last season he delivered 26 goals and seven assists in 47 matches for Almeria, numbers that demand attention regardless of division or context. He operates mainly as an attacking midfielder, though he can work from either flank, which matters for a squad facing Premier League and Champions League demands.
This sort of player fits a modern recruitment model. He is young enough to improve, experienced enough to contribute, and versatile enough to cover multiple roles. Liverpool have already moved decisively in Spain by landing Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5m, and Arribas would represent another targeted move rather than a scattergun one.

The complications are obvious. Real Madrid hold a 50 per cent sell-on clause, so Almeria will want to maximise any fee. With three years left on his contract, they are under no pressure to accept a discount. Sporting CP are also watching closely, which gives this story a competitive edge even if Liverpool’s appeal remains stronger on paper.
There is also the football question. Arribas may be a smart signing, but smart does not automatically mean transformative. If Liverpool see him as a squad option with upside, that is easy to understand. If they see him as the central answer to Mohamed Salah’s departure, that is harder to buy into.
This is where blunt realism is required. Arribas could be an efficient addition and a shrewd one. He could help across several positions and offer depth with real output. What he would not be is a marquee replacement for one of the most decisive forwards Liverpool have had in the modern era.
That is why the wider picture still matters. Liverpool need another attacker with elite pedigree, and the noise around Bradley Barcola points to that understanding inside the club. Arribas makes sense, but only as part of a broader plan, not the headline act.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is one of those reports that feels sensible but slightly unsettling at the same time. Arribas looks like a good footballer, the numbers are strong, and there is enough versatility there to believe he could help. If Iraola wants adaptable, technically sound players who can be coached into different roles, then this one is easy to understand.
The uncertainty comes from the scale of the rebuild. Liverpool are not shopping for neat squad pieces alone. They are trying to recover momentum after a poor 2025/26 campaign and move into a new era under Iraola. Supporters will naturally ask whether players like Arribas raise the level enough in the biggest matches.
That does not mean the idea should be dismissed. Plenty of smart transfers look underwhelming at first and age very well. The concern is more about sequence and balance. If Arribas arrives alongside a top-level forward, then fine, it looks like clever squad construction. If he arrives and is effectively sold as a major answer in attack, then fans will worry.
There is also the familiar issue of competition. When Portuguese clubs and others start circling, prices shift quickly and plans can change. Liverpool need to be decisive. Supporters can accept a strategic signing, but they will still want proof that the club are aiming higher as well.
