Manchester United Weigh Waldemar Anton Move as Defensive Plans Evolve

Manchester United’s summer business has already carried a clear shape, with midfield reinforcement pushed to the front of the queue. Yet as the window develops, attention appears to be spreading across the pitch, and fresh reporting from Fussball Daten suggests centre-back is now firmly under consideration.

That shift is understandable. Harry Maguire is moving into the final year of his contract, Matthijs de Ligt is working his way back from back surgery, and Lisandro Martínez has suffered a thigh issue after the World Cup final. Even for a club with established depth, those variables can quickly alter planning.

The name emerging in this context is Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton. United are said to be assessing a move for the Germany international, with Dortmund’s valuation set at €40m, which equates to £34m. Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa are also credited with interest, adding a competitive edge to any talks that might follow.

Waldemar Anton emerges in United thinking

Anton’s profile is easy to understand from a recruitment perspective. He is experienced, physically robust and has built a strong reputation in the Bundesliga. His standing has risen further after international recognition with Germany, and his leadership qualities are clearly part of the appeal.

The original report notes that he has been described as “incredible” by Julian Nagelsmann, while United are also believed to be willing to put forward a “lucrative” contract package if they decide to press ahead. That language points to a player viewed as ready-made rather than developmental, someone who could arrive and cope with Premier League demands quickly.

Dortmund, for their part, are not thought to be actively seeking a sale. Even so, a sizeable offer can test any position, particularly when a player is 30 and a substantial fee is on the table.

Transfer strategy raises broader questions

This is where the discussion becomes more interesting. United have already prioritised midfield, and there remains an expectation that other areas, including left-back and left wing, will also require attention before the market closes. In that context, allocating £34m to a central defender would represent a significant strategic call.

There is logic to adding certainty at the back, especially if the medical outlook on existing options remains unclear. Clubs competing on multiple fronts rarely regret having one more trusted defender. At the same time, United may need to be certain that Anton would play enough to justify both the transfer fee and salary package reportedly under consideration.

Squad depth versus pathway balance

One of the more delicate parts of this decision concerns pathway management. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are among the defenders who would naturally hope to benefit if injuries create opportunities early in the season. Bringing in an older, established option can stabilise the squad, but it can also narrow minutes for younger players at a key stage of their development.

From United’s side, this feels less like a straightforward pursuit and more like contingency planning with conviction behind it. If the club believe Anton can raise the floor immediately, the move may gather pace. If they judge existing cover to be enough, resources could yet be channelled elsewhere.

Our View

From a Manchester United fan perspective, this report is intriguing because it sits right on the line between sensible and unnecessary. You can absolutely see the case for another centre-back. De Ligt’s recovery needs managing carefully, Martínez’s fitness record has become a concern, and Maguire’s contract situation adds uncertainty.

But there is also a strong argument that United should be brave with what they already have. Yoro is a serious talent and Heaven looks like someone the club should trust in the right moments. If Anton arrives for £34m, he has to play, and if he plays, someone else loses meaningful development time.

The age profile matters too. At 30, Anton would be coming in as a short-to-medium-term solution. That can work brilliantly if he settles fast and leads well, but it also means United must be sure this is a genuine need rather than a market reaction to a few injuries.

As a supporter, the bigger concern is whether money would be better spent elsewhere. The squad still feels like it needs more thrust in wide areas and greater balance overall. If the budget stretches comfortably, fine, add proven depth. If it does not, centre-back feels lower on the list. Anton sounds reliable, experienced and competitive, but this only makes full sense if United view him as a major contributor rather than expensive insurance.
