Manchester United appear to be keeping a watchful eye on West Ham’s uncertain future and how it might impact one of their key players.
TalkSport reports that “Mateus Fernandes will seek to leave West Ham if they are relegated.” That single sentence frames the entire situation. Relegation does not only reshape league tables, it reshapes careers.

Fernandes arrived from Southampton last summer in a £42m deal and has quietly been one of West Ham’s most consistent performers. His output of three goals and three assists across 27 league appearances speaks to a player steadily growing into the rhythm of the top flight.
TalkSport also note that “Manchester United, who are looking to bolster their midfield this summer, are among the clubs who have scouted Fernandes.”
United’s midfield rebuild has been a recurring theme in recent windows. A young midfielder already acclimatised to Premier League intensity fits neatly into that long term thinking. Fernandes’ situation, tied closely to West Ham’s survival hopes, may yet become one of the summer’s more intriguing dominoes.
United’s midfield has lacked balance for several seasons and the idea of adding a younger, energetic presence is appealing to supporters. Fernandes may not yet be a headline grabbing name, but his profile suggests potential value.
Fans often talk about recruitment strategy. Buying players already adapted to the Premier League reduces risk. Fernandes has handled the pace and physicality of English football while still developing at just 21. That combination is exactly what many supporters want to see more of in United’s transfer planning.
There is also a financial angle. If West Ham were relegated, leverage shifts dramatically. Clubs facing Championship football often need to sell. Supporters would recognise that scenario as an opportunity for United to negotiate a more favourable deal than the £42m West Ham originally paid.
However, questions remain. Would Fernandes arrive as a starter or part of a broader midfield refresh? United supporters have seen promising players arrive before without a clear role.
Still, the logic behind the interest feels sound. A young midfielder entering his prime, already proven in the league, could represent the kind of intelligent squad building many fans believe the club needs moving forward.
