Newcastle United are positioning themselves firmly in the race for AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, one of the Netherlands’ most coveted emerging talents. Daily Mail Sport reports that the 19-year-old has caught the attention of Europe’s strongest recruitment departments, and the comparison from Ronald Koeman to Barcelona’s Pedri has pushed anticipation to another level.

Smit, contracted until 2028, has already made 50 senior appearances for AZ and carries valuable experience in European competition. With a mooted fee of around £20million, his availability next year is likely rather than speculative, and executives across Spain and Germany are tracking his development closely.
Koeman’s assessment was glowing and specific. “He has the awareness to receive in tight spaces and move the ball forward. That is something we value. The resemblance people see (with Pedri) is in how he positions himself and his decision-making under pressure.” As the Netherlands manager noted, playing regularly remains key at this stage of Smit’s career.

Newcastle believe they can offer exactly that. Ross Wilson, the club’s new sporting director, is reshaping the club’s talent pipeline with a renewed focus on players who can grow into European-level operators. Daily Mail Sport states that Smit sits near the top of their technical scouting lists.
With Eddie Howe operating a three-man midfield, the club have been exploring options to bolster the central unit. Players such as Joelinton and Joe Willock have yet to rediscover their highest levels, and uncertainty remains over Sandro Tonali’s long-term situation. Bringing in a midfielder with press resistance and incision aligns with Newcastle’s strategic direction.
Smit has long impressed AZ’s coaches with his ability to play through the lines and dictate the rhythm of a match. In the Netherlands, comparisons have also extended to Kevin De Bruyne, hinting at the scope of his ceiling. His breakout moment in 2023, when he scored from 50 yards against Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League, added early evidence of flair, confidence and imagination.
Last summer, as the Netherlands won the Under-19 European Championship, Smit was awarded the tournament’s most valuable player and finished joint top goalscorer. That tournament cemented his reputation as a midfielder who combines intelligence with end-product.
While Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund continue to monitor the situation, there is a growing feeling that guaranteed minutes could tilt the equation. A move to a Premier League side willing to hand him responsibility may appeal more than fighting for space in a star-studded squad elsewhere.
Crystal Palace have also shown interest and faced Smit during AZ’s 3-1 loss at Selhurst Park in the Conference League, but Newcastle are accelerating their efforts, sensing an opportunity to jump ahead.
For a club that has spent recent windows strengthening methodically, Smit fits the next stage of their evolution.
This report will stir excitement in a way only a smart, forward-thinking transfer link can. Fans have watched the club shift from short-term squad repair to building with a long lens, and targeting a 19-year-old midfielder with elite-level potential feels exactly like the kind of move that signals ambition without recklessness.
There will be real belief among supporters that Newcastle can win this race. The prospect of offering Smit meaningful minutes is not just sales talk, it is grounded in reality. Howe has a track record of integrating young players and improving technical midfielders, and with form dips in the current group, Smit would not be arriving as a distant project. He would be competing immediately.
Newcastle fans also understand the value of securing future stars before they become unaffordable or unattainable. Competing with Barcelona and Real Madrid in the market is one thing, but getting in early with a proper development plan is often the key advantage. Many supporters will view Smit as the type of player who fits the club’s current identity, combining intelligence, energy and tactical awareness.
There will naturally be some caution too, especially with the fee and competition involved. But overall, the reaction would be one of optimism. If Newcastle manage to sign Smit, it would be seen as a statement of the club’s long-term project, as well as a decisive victory in a highly competitive field.
