Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s emergence on the free-agent market has triggered interest from several Premier League and overseas clubs, with the 28-year-old striker now firmly on the radar for teams seeking attacking reinforcements.
Following his departure from Everton, the England international presents an appealing proposition for sides in search of a proven Premier League forward. However, negotiations are far from straightforward. Sources in the football industry suggest that Calvert-Lewin’s wage expectations – understood to be in the region of £100,000 per week – and concerns over his injury record have caused hesitation among some potential suitors.
Despite those factors, his track record in the top flight remains highly respected. Last season, he made 26 Premier League appearances for the Toffees, contributing both as a starter and impact substitute.
The Old Trafford hierarchy are considering the former Everton striker as a rotational option, with the view to bolstering squad depth for new head coach Ruben Amorim.
The plan would see Calvert-Lewin operate as a third or fourth-choice forward, offering cover across a demanding campaign that will feature domestic and European commitments. While Sesko remains the priority target, contingency planning has brought the free agent into United’s sights.
Elsewhere in England’s top flight, Newcastle United have entered preliminary talks but discussions have stalled due to the player’s salary demands. West Ham United, under Graham Potter, have taken a more assertive stance, signalling willingness to take a calculated gamble to secure his services.
Perhaps the most aggressive domestic move has come from Sunderland. The Championship club is prepared to table one of the most lucrative contracts in English football outside the top flight, coupled with guaranteed first-team football – a significant draw for a player keen to re-establish himself as a regular starter.
Interest in Calvert-Lewin is not confined to British shores. Clubs from the Bundesliga, Major League Soccer, and the Saudi Pro League are all understood to be tracking developments. His availability without a transfer fee makes him a potentially low-risk acquisition for teams abroad, particularly those aiming to add experience and presence to their attacking lines.
One subplot to monitor involves Aston Villa. Should Ollie Watkins depart for Manchester United, Calvert-Lewin has been earmarked as a direct replacement. Villa’s recruitment team see value in his Premier League experience and believe he could transition seamlessly into their system, ensuring attacking continuity.
